ABSTRACT
The ground water supply in rural areas faces number of challenges which includes deterioration of water quality, depleting water table and drying of wells due to over exploitation of water resources, pollution of ground water sources due to indiscriminate disposal of solid waste and effluent from municipalities and industries . It is recognized that supply safe and adequate water to rural communities is not possible by conventional implementation and technology interventions. In this project, fifteen ground water samples were collected from three districts namely Madurai, Virudhunagar and Thanjavur. The Chemical test was conducted in Environmental Engineering laboratory. Test results showed that the Total dissolved solids (TDS) and Sulphates concentration in Virudhunagar district samples were exceed the Bureau of Indian Standard permissible limits. The simple low cost vetiver filtration unit is developed to treat the ground water. The filtration unit consists of gravel, sand, vetiver root and red earth mix. The ground water sample is passed by vetiver filtration unit and the filtered ground water sample is tested in laboratory. The Total dissolved solids (TDS) and Sulphate concentration in filtered ground water is comes within Bureau of Indian Standard permissible limits. It is also evident from the test results, the vetiverfiltrationunit were efficient up tp 70 to 80 %. in removing Total dissolved solids (TDS) at low cost.
