ABSTRACT
The study area formsa part of Coimbatore district which lies in between latitudes 10˚13’00” to 11˚23’30” of North and longitudes 76˚38’00” to 77˚30’00” East.A seismicity study is of great importance to understand the dynamic behavior of the earth and is useful to determine the earthquake hazard in a specific region. There are 4 major seismic zones (II, III, IV and V) in India and most parts of northern and eastern Tamilnadu are categorized under zone III. Recently the Bureau of Indian Standard upgraded the seismic status of Coimbatore falls from Moderate to High (BIS: 1893, 2001). The Satellite images and GIS software are used for digitizing the map and buffering and layer analysis. The BIS Codes employed for designing the seismic structure. The result of the study may be used as first-hand information in selecting the appropriate earthquake resistant features in designing the forthcoming new buildings against seismic ground motion of the city.
