ABSTRACT
The study area forms a part of Coimbatore district which was experienced moderate earthquakes in the historical past. It lies in between latitudes 10˚13‟00” to 11˚23‟30” of North and longitudes 76˚38‟00” to 77˚30‟00” East. A seismicity study is of great importance to understand the dynamic behaviour of the earth and is useful to determine the earthquake hazard in a specific region. There are 4 major seismic zones (zones II, III, IV and V) in India and most parts of northern and eastern Tamilnadu are categorized under zone III. The study area Coimbatore has a multi-dimensional growth in development of its infrastructures and population which is recently falls from Moderate to High (BIS: 1893, 2001). Earth quake resisting construction method is one of the developing method in civil engineering field and it is necessary. Even though a lot of methods are followed to resist the building from earth quake, it is considered that geological datas and earth features based work is better way to resist the structure from earthquake. The satellite images are utilized and prepared the base maps like fault, lineaments, geology and soil maps and demarcated the epicentres falls in the study area. As per the principle of BIS Code the resistant structure was designed. GIS and Auto CAD software’s are employed and digitized the base map and designed the seismic structure. The result of the study is used as first-hand information in selecting the appropriate earthquake resistant features in designing the forthcoming new buildings against seismic ground motion of the city.
Keywords: Coimbatore , Lineament, Fault, BIS Code, RS & GIS, Auto CAD.
